Water Leaks

You are responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance and replacement of all the private water pipes and fittings that run from your property up to the water meter’s outlet riser.

Burst water pipes in or around the home can be isolated from the properties water meter.

Water meters are typically located in front yards, approximately 0.5 - 2 meters inside the front property boundary.  It is often found near the front garden tap.

Water meters can be installed above ground or below ground. Below ground water meters may require a screwdriver to assist in opening the lid to gain access to the water meter.

All water meters have an isolation valve on the inlet side which can be turned off in the event of a burst within the property.

Tap Style: Turn tap clockwise to isolate incoming water to the property.

Ball Valve Style: Turn clockwise until handle locks off, typically it’s a ¼ turn.

Isolating the water meter will stop any water leaks or burst pipes on your property and eliminate the emergency.  Call us on 03 9720 3337 or 0417 310 007  for assistance.

If the water does not stop straight away, don't be alarmed as it may be draining the remaining water in the line.

In the event the water keeps running, look at your water meter to see if the dial keeps turning.  If it does, this will indicate the isolation valve at the meter has not been turned off completely or is faulty.  Attempt to turn the isolation valve off again, and if this doesn't stop the water please call your water distributer to advise them you are unable to isolate the water to your house.

Your water distributer will come and fix the front isolation tap, but you will still be required to engage a plumber to rectify the issue.

Running Taps or Leaking Fixtures

If you are experiencing gushing taps or gushing water, they generally need to be isolated at the meter, however in more minor cases, an individual tap or fixture can be isolated (in some cases).

If you locate the isolation valve(s) for the fixture or tap, turn the handle clockwise or for ¼ turn taps, set the handle to 90deg.

These isolation taps/mini stops are generally located in the cabinetry below the tap.
